Spotlight vs mdfind

Or how to debug why your Spotlight plugin is not finding your files (on Lion).

Let’s say that you’re writing a Core Data, and you’re having a store where you’re saving all your entities (e.g. books). There are a couple of tutorials on how to integrate this Core Data store with Spotlight, for example Marcus Zarra’s presentation “Spotlight and QuickLook vs. Core Data” (NSConference ‘09) or his excellent book Core Data: Apple’s API for Persisting Data on Mac OS X. Basically, each time you’re adding/updating/deleting a row, you are creating/updating a file containing some data you want to index in Spotlight (e.g. book title, description, ISBN, etc).

However, things might not work from the first run. I suggest to first try all the steps from Troubleshooting Spotlight Importers.

If the above steps doesn’t helpe, here are a couple of steps you can also try. Test if your import works with your file:

bash$ mdimport -d2 -g ~/path/to/TestSpotlight.mdimporter ~/path/to/book-isbn-123456.book

There are two important parts in the output of this command. The first one is this:

loading plugin at path '/Users/.../TestSpotlight.mdimporter' for UTIs: com.coralmagnetic.book.

This part says what UTI does your importer know to read (in this case com.coralmagnetic.book).

Import: magic_file returned "XML document text" for path "/Users/.../book-isbn-123456.book" of type "dyn.ah62d4rv4ge81s7psqvw1e2xtr7zxe"

This part says what type is the file you’re trying to import. In this particular case, it says ‘XML document text’. Because there is a missmatch between the importer plugin and the importer file, this file will be scanned and imported as ‘generic’ file. You will be able to find it using the file name (or extension name), but you won’t find it by looking for content. However if this line says:

Importing type 'com.coralmagnetic.book' using ...

then it should import your content. In case there is a missmatch between these UTIs, you need to check both your Info.plist files (from the App and from the Spotlight importer) for the array key ‘CFBundleDocumentTypes’ to contain key ‘LSItemContentTypes’ with the value ‘com.coralmagnetic.wunderbook’.

Let’s say you made it so far, and the correct importer is reading all the info from your meta file, and somewhere in the output you’re seeing it as:

kMDItemDisplayName = "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Caroll";
kMDItemKind = {
  "" = "Book";
};
kMDItemTextContent = "It tells of a girl named Alice...";
kMDItemTitle = "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland";
kObjectId = "x-coredata://63CB1FB7-9F56-465B-8104-1A0DC8AA383E/Books/p112";

Now, you should try to look for them using Spotlight search (and his command line equivalent: mdfind). If both commands return something, you’re done.

But let’s assume that at an earlier point, as a good MacOSX developer, you’ve decided to save the the files somewhere in the caches directory: ~/Library/Caches/Books/. Running:

mdimport -d2 -g ~/Downloads/Spotlight/TestSpotlight.mdimporter ~/Library/Caches/Books/book-isbn-123456.book

will return the correct, matching UTIs, but it wouldn’t list the content of the meta file (e.g. the kMDItemTitle key). However, if you move the same “book-isbn-123456.book” file to a different place (e.g. ~/Desktop), the content is properly read. And now is when ‘mdls’ it comes to the rescue, to list the metadata for each specified file.

If you run mdls for the same file, both in ~/Library/Caches/Books and ~/Desktop, you’ll notice a couple of things.

First, in the ~/Library/Caches directory you have this part:

kMDItemSupportFileType = (
  MDSystemFile
)

And in ~/Desktop directory you have this part:

kIsbn        = 12345
kMDItemTitle = "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"
kObjectId    = "x-coredata://63CB1FB7-9F56-465B-8104-1A0DC8AA383E/Books/p112"

The first part, it tells Spotlight that this is a system file. This means that you won’t be able to find it via the right top Spotlight search (command + space). To find these files, use Finder search, click on the + and add “System files” “are included”.

I don’t know the exact reason that it doesn’t index the files from ~/Library/Caches, but it indexes them from other ~/Library directories. I suppose it has a list of ‘Exclusions’ saved somewhere (it’s not in the regular Spotlight preferences panel). I found this accidentally, and it could be that it wasn’t present before Mac OSX Lion.

Fixing UIAnimator removeAnimationsForTarget crash

You tested your app on the Simulator and everything is fine. You’ve moved it to the iPhone, and when you reach a certain TableViewController your app crashes with the following message: [UIAnimator removeAnimationsForTarget:]. How would you approach this issue? Using common sense, try to set a breakpoint in each function from your TableViewController, then step through them to see in/after which function does the crash happens. In my case, the responsible code was found in the function:

- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath;

It entered this function, once for each cell, but it crashed after exiting. As a new iOS developer, I was trying to set a couple of different UITableViewCell in one TableViewController. Here is a sample of the code I was using in the first version:

- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath {
    // Setting a generic cell
    static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell";
    UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier];
    if (cell == nil) {
        cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier]
                autorelease];
    }
    // ... Other code
    // Replace generic cell with custom cell
    if(objectType == CMMUItemViewSectionSummary){
        NSArray *topLevelObjects = [[NSBundle mainBundle]
            loadNibNamed:@"SummaryCell"
            owner:nil
            options:nil];
        for(id currentObject in topLevelObjects){
            if([currentObject isKindOfClass:[SummaryCell class]]){
                cell = (SummaryCell *) currentObject;
                break;
            }
        }
        cell.summaryData = summaryData;
    } else if(objectType == CMMUItemViewSectionStatuses){
            NSArray *topLevelObjects = [[NSBundle mainBundle]
                                        loadNibNamed:@"ItemStatusCell"
                                        owner:nil
                                        options:nil];
            for(id currentObject in topLevelObjects){
                if([currentObject isKindOfClass:[ItemStatusCell class]]){
                    cell = (ItemStatusCell *) currentObject;
                    break;
                }
            }
        cell.statusesData = statusesData;
    } else {
        cell.textLabel.text = someDefaultData;
    }
    // Return the cell
    return cell;
}

As you can see in the above code, after I was getting a generic cell, I would try to replace it with a custom cell. I guess that somewhere after tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: some other piece of code was trying to cleanup the unused cells. Figuring this, it was pretty easy to get it fixed. Using the same sample code:

- (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath {
    NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; //Generic identifier
    UITableViewCell *cell;
    // Other code ...
    CellIdentifier = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"Cell%d", objectType]; //cell of my object type
    cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier];
    if(objectType == CMMUItemViewSectionSummary){
        if (cell == nil) {
            NSArray *topLevelObjects = [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"SummaryCell"
                owner:nil
                options:nil];
            for(id currentObject in topLevelObjects){
                if([currentObject isKindOfClass:[SummaryCell class]]){
                    cell = (SummaryCell *) currentObject;
                    break;
                }
            }
        }
        cell.summaryData = summaryData;
    } else if(objectType == CMMUItemViewSectionStatuses){
        if (cell == nil) {
            NSArray *topLevelObjects = [[NSBundle mainBundle]
                loadNibNamed:@"ItemStatusCell"
                owner:nil
                options:nil];
            for(id currentObject in topLevelObjects){
                if([currentObject isKindOfClass:[ItemStatusCell class]]){
                    cell = (ItemStatusCell *) currentObject;
                    break;
                }
            }
        }
        cell.statusesData = statusesData;
    }
    if(cell == nil){
        cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault
                                           reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier]
                    autorelease];
    }
    return cell;
}

Even if is not the optimal way to use custom TableViewCells, it solves the crash problem. Improvements and suggestions, are welcomed.

On the way to work

Take this morning on my regular cycling to work. I’ve wanted to test the quality of the 4th gen iPod Touch’ camera.

Gh. Lazar Street

GTD and MacOSX Apps

I’ve found out about GTD around 2008 and tempted to try it out, I’ve checked what Macs apps are available for that. Technically not all these apps are 100% GTD but more on the ‘task management’ side.

After a short research I picked OmniFocus at the beginning of 2009. Since I don’t follow all GTD rules, I used is mostly as a “glorified to do list”, installed on the laptop only. I added a couple of tasks and projects and started to tick them off. It had recurrent tasks (which were used to keep track of my haircut schedule), folders/projects (to store lists of appliances/gadgets to buy or the debts like the car loan).

When Andy from Potion Factory launched the first beta of The Hit List, I gave that a try too. I preferred the UI design to OmniFocus’ one. It also had folders/projects and recurrent tasks. It even came up with a setup project meant to showcase the best of it. On the preferences pane it has a tab called iPhone Sync – coming soon. One of my reasons was the hope that the iPhone client would come soon enough (2–4 months) and it would cost less then OmniFocus for iPhone (was hoping for $10). As of today, there is no iPhone app (and no news about it).

In this period of time there was another application available: Things (from Cultured Code). The couple of times when I checked it, it lacked recurrent task and a way to make tasks available only from a certain date on. It didn’t manage to convince me to switch away from THL then. But because THL for iPhone is still in development, about a week ago I decided to give Things another try. Recurrent tasks look nice enough and there is a way to add tasks that are visible only from a certain date on. The prices of the iPhone/iPad apps are in the ranges I’m willing to pay. I got used to the way Things handles tasks (vs THL) and the future looks promising. I’ll give Things a try until the end of August.

I don’t want to complain about Andy’s silence period. He’s a one man indie shop and that makes it easy to throw his work schedule of the track. After all, on my screensaver project things are not moving as fast as I’d like to.

Since it was somewhat clear for me that I should replace THL, I tried to get back to OmniFocus, but I can’t get used to its user interface and work flow.

What I’ve learned from this story is that I should not buy a product based on the promises of “coming soon”. Probably I’d be much happier if I have had paid $20 for OmniFocus for iPhone and use it on a second device for about one year instead of being cheap and switching to The Hit List and now to Things. On the other hand, I really enjoyed these later two programs.

For other interested persons, I’ve attached a comparison screenshot with my pet peeve, recurrent tasks.

OmniFocus recurrent tasks

More Then 100 Percent

Apple and 100%

Speaking of user interfaces, I have found Apple’s secret sauce. They always give more then 100% when working on a product or program. The proof is in the attached screenshot.

/Irony.

I was trying to open all the history links from mobile.de, browsed Saturday. As a side note neither Mac OSX nor Firefox crashed after that, and I managed to visit those pages again (and close them again, one by one).

Snow Leopard wakes from sleep immediately

I’ve noticed that starting with a couple of days ago, the iMac doesn’t want to go to sleep anymore. If I go to Apple menu then Sleep, it tries to go to sleep, but after the hard disk stops spinning, it wakes up again.

After carefully inspecting the Console logs I’ve come up with the following messages:

Feb  8 20:32:17 ... kernel[0]: hibernate_write_image done(0)
Feb  8 20:32:17 ... kernel[0]: sleep
Feb  8 20:32:17 ... kernel[0]: Wake reason =
Feb  8 20:32:17 ... kernel[0]: System Wake
Feb  8 20:32:17 ... kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 5

What’s particularly strange is the empty “Wake reason = ” message after sleep. Usually, there you can see different messages like “Wake reason = OHC1”, when you wake the Mac by pressing a key on the USB keyboard.

After removing some innocent Extensions (Remote Buddy and CoolBook2—this one ended up here when I’ve migrated the data from the laptop), I’ve found out the root cause.

In my case, it was the wireless network’s fault. I already have a regular network cable between the Time Capsule and the iMac, but I also have a wireless network for the mobile devices. For some reason, I’ve activated the wireless network on the iMac. This caused the computer to wake up from sleep immediately, but no “Wake reason” was given.

In case your computer doesn’t want to go to sleep too, try this.

Uncluttered, Phase Two

Uncluttered desk

New, smaller, computer requires new desk, which requires new cables setup. Different from the previous setup, I had to cut about 40cm of the board off, ditched the Western Digital MyBook external hard drive (which failed one month after the two years warranty expired). Also I took the opportunity to get rid of the second outlet set.

Attention to details in professional IDEs

About 3 weeks ago I had to switch from Mac OS X (Leopard) to Windows (7 beta build 7100) at the company I work for. One of the reasons of the change was starting of a new project, that will be developed on Microsoft stack (C#, ASP.NET MVC and Microsoft SQL Server 2008). The project will have to be deployed on some Windows Servers, so no point in using C# Mono or PHP.

The first week, was spent getting used to the new platform and all the tools available on it. Installing pasteboard history (ClipX), an Orthodox File Manager (Nomad.NET), a proper editor (GVim for Windows) was something you had to do if you wanted to have a proper work environment.

The second week, I started to take a closer look at the IDE itself, as I already received the sources I was going to work from now on. For a change, it is nice to have code completion for about every namespace, class, method or function, but is annoying not to have word completion (for strange words you have to write inside string declarations like SQL keywords).

Visual Studio 2008 vs XCode

Beside the different change in layout, one of the other things that I noticed was the lack of attention to details in user interface and the general lack of polish. For example, in the above image you can see the subtle blue break point (enabled or disabled) in XCode versus the red break point from Visual Studio. I’d rather have 10 more pixels to fit one or two characters then to have 10% unused space in a window. Also see the subtle indicator for folding area, shades of gray in XCode and square with +/- sign in Visual Studio.

A much more visible differences in Visual Studio are the items from the menu item and the layout of the sub-windows that change when you go from Edit mode into Run/Debug mode and back. It is distracting to see shapes changing in background when you should concentrate on the front window. Better to keep everything fix and in place, and let you focus on the things you’re doing.

These are the touches that makes most of Mac OS X software much more enjoyable then most of the Windows software.

The Teapot Bell

The bicycle teapot bell

During my business trip to Munich I haven’t had much time to wonder around and visit bike shops (although I bumped into a big one near Theresienwiese U-Bahn station), that’s why I’ve ordered this nice bicycle teapot shaped bell from Amazon.de. I think that it’s nice form goes much better with my city bicycle then a regular one. I’m sure that the nice and shiny look will wear out pretty soon.

Productivity on Mac

As many office workers, I got infected with the ‘productivity bug’.

I found myself using two types of software daily (or at least weekly) on Mac (that I didn’t use while I was using Linux).

The first type is task management, represented by OmniFocus, which helps me not to forget different task/errands.

For what I use OmniFocus?

  • List of monthly rates I have to pay (car loan, assurance fees)
  • List of important things (utilities) or less important (having a haircut) I have to pay from time to time
  • List of things I’d like to buy in the new future (inline skates, shoes)
  • List of things to do (home errands)

For what I don’t use it?

  • Managing projects, although some projects are written down there, but I don’t work on them much.
  • Grocery store lists. For that I use a small post it on the fridge, where I write what I should not forget to buy on the next trip to grocery store.

Also not to forget dates/meetings/events I use iCal, the build in calendaring software. I prefer this to OmniFocus because it syncs with my iPods and with my mobile phone. OmniFocus can sync some of it’s entries to iCal too. I’ve tried this feature once, but I think I put all my to-dos in one calendar and that it become littered with entries from OmniFocus. On a screencast I’ve seen that you should sync only one of your contexts (e.g. errands) with one of the calendars, not all the contexts with one calendar (as I did).

Moleskines

Moleskine Notebooks

Famous Moleskines notebooks come to Timisoara, and other small Romanian cities, where you can find Carturesti bookstores. Until now, you couldn’t find this brand of notebooks in Romania, and Amazon didn’t ship anything besides books to non-Amazon countries.

I got the small one on my trip to Belgrade, in April 2008, and the medium one on my trip to San Francisco, in September 2008.

I didn’t use them much, though. Only the medium one has some notes, from a couple of conference presentations.

San Francisco

Going from Santa Clara to San Francisco, by public transport, gives you a lot of time to think, since you have to change 2 light trains (VTA, BART) and one regional train (Caltrain) you’ll need roughly 2 and half hours from one place to another. On the way to airport, I had some time to note a few things about my experience there and about ZendCon 2008.

Coming from a smallish country (population of 22 millions) and an even smallish city (population of 400 000) I was impressed by the big distances Americans in these area have to travel daily. If you’re not leaving 5 or 10 km closer to your office, and in a big city, your daily possibilities are limited and is not practical to use the public transport for everything, because you’ll have to spend lots of time commuting (for example this more then 2 hours trip by public transport could have be done in 40–50 minutes by car, there are 70km, after all). We (me and my Ciao colleagues) have lost this time when we had to go from Santa Clara to San Francisco, so didn’t manage to see much. We’ve seen some classic tourist stuff, Golden Gate, the Cable Train, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Mission Street, a Spanish neighborhood we’ve landed in by mistake. Still, it was surreal to see all the things you see in the movies, the exterior fire stairs, the American Police cars, the Transamerica Pyramid building and other landmarks from San Francisco.

These tourist stuff happened on Saturday and Sunday, the first two days I spent here. For the rest of the week, I’ve attended ZendConf in Santa Clara.

More about the conference, in another post.

Open for Business

Just a couple of days before Greenfield Online announced that they will be bough by a private invest firm (hint: google for SRVY and follow the news), Ciao Romania had the new office opening party “Ciao – Open for business”. The party that celebrated the move in the best office spaces a company can buy in this town (City Business Center Timisoara) was celebrated at the Aquarium Restaurant from building’s 6th floor. Along with mere mortals from Timisoara office, were present representatives from Munich office, members of local students organizations and company’s collaborators.

Pictures from this, small for other but important for the company, event can be seen in the Ciao Open for Business album.

to buy list 2007 completed

Forced by a small bump I passed with my bicycle last week, today I bought the last item left on the to buy list. From the first rides, I can say that riding this bicycle will be more comfortable than the previous one. That’s good, because I’d like to enjoy as much as I can the last things that can be considered workout.

Though, it has a small annoyance. When I start to pedal, there are some hickups. Probably some loose sprockets inside the rear hub. I’ll take a look one evening to see if I can fix it.

Sziget 2007

Sziget 2007

Sziget 2007

As my sweetheart said, real impressions about Sziget should be written 2 weeks after the festival ended.

Really really nice concerts (The Chemical Brothers, Hooverphonic, Manu Chao, Fanfara Ciocarlia) and really nice people (our Romanian neighbours, Alexandra, Cristi, Simi, Dog and their friends, our French neighbours, group 1 (the hot guys) and group 2 (Francois and friends), the Australian Paula and friends) is what I’ll remember with a smile on my face from this year’s Sziget.

This year I’ve noticed that there are many Romanians attending this festival. They are split in two big groups: cool guys (and girls) and “leave me alone, I’m too busy to talk with you, because I’m from Bucharest/Timisoara and you’re not, and you are not as cool as I am” groups. I’ve met people from both of them.

What I didn’t like this year was the weather and the fact that almost all the things were more expensive this year. The taste of money is sweet. :(

Evolution of ticket entrance price from 2003 to 2007:

  • 2003 Daily 12 Eur, Weekly 75 Eur
  • 2004 Daily 15 Eur, Weekly 80 Eur
  • 2005 Daily 20 Eur, Weekly 100 Eur
  • 2006 Daily 25 Eur, Weekly 120 Eur
  • 2007 Daily 30 Eur, Weekly 150 Eur

a clean keyboard

While dreaming at a new Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 for my home computer, I’ve taken the time to clean up the keyboard I use at my current workplace. Since I’ve used the first MS Natural Keyboards, a couple of years back, I preffered them to normal format keyboards.

It looked so dirty because I didn’t clean it since I have bought it 4 years ago.

One of the conditions for the new company I’ve wanted to work was to let me bring in my keyboard. The other one was to let me use my OS of choice (Slackware at that time, Gentoo now).

hacky mania

hacky mania

hacky mania

Many thanks goes to our colleague from Wroclaw, Hubert, for sending us two new hacky sacks.

We’ve been infected by this virus 2 months ago when the Wroclaw team gifted one hacky sack to Timisoara team through Sergiu. This was the only thing that managed to involve the whole programmers’ room.

It’s magic. When one of us want to play, almost always, everyone will stop working for 15 minutes and will join. It happens 2 times a day, once before lunch and once after. These are the joy moments of the day. That’s why we are waiting for more 4 sacks to arrive from Munich this week.

Long live hacky sacks.

Update: Using a much nicer picture made with Alex’s new camera.

bluejacking

bluejacking

This was the image that I sent to a random person in Unirii Square on Saturday evening. Luckyly that person was sitting right next to me, and I could see his reaction. It was a forty something years old guy with his wife. Judging by their face expression, they didn’t know much about Bluejacking (sending unsolicited messages over Bluetooth to other Bluetooth-enabled devices like phones, laptops or PDAs).

I’ve wanted to try bluejacking since a couple of years ago, when I’ve read about it on internet, but my previous phone didn’t have bluetooth. Luckyly, my borther gave me his Nokia 6260 which I can use for that (and as a playground for Python on S60 series).

Munich Skating

Munich Skating

Munich Skating

Munich Blade Night takes place every Monday evening from 6–7-8–9, starting from Wredestrasse . Usually lots of people attend this skate. The maximum number of people reached in 2001, 37000. 2006’s average was 11000 (they blamed it on the European Soccer/Football Worldcup).

Also, as seen in the picture, Munich has a slalom scene too. They meet in the Olympia Park, near the tower. I was impressed by their skills.

Without braces

At last, my teeth are free again, (without braces that is). This means I can eat everything I want (peanuts, chewing gum, coco nuts, carrots, cabbage, apples) and many more, I don’t have to worry about what kind of food is appropriate to eat while having lunch or dinner out.

I wore it since 15th of October 2003. That’s 1238 days which translates to approx 3 years 4 months and 23 days. (Is it coincidence that is older then my blog/domain?) Initially, I thought that I have to wore it for one year. Then, after a year and a half there were some complications and I had to have a molar pulled out, and another molar moved a couple of mm to the front teeth. This part extended the time I had to wear it with more then one year.

Do I see any improvements, yes, some. My upper teeth are straighter, but I don’t see any improvements to my profile or to my lower teeth. Perhaps there are any, but not so visible with the naked eye. It is true that meanwhile I gained more then 10kg, and my profile looks kind of different.

Would I recommend to wear braces to anyone who needs it? Yes, but not more then 2 years. Although you get use to them after the first 3 months.

Later edit: the duration of the treatment was longer than the initial estimated period because of the molar complication (which is related to another doctor, not my orthodontist).

Puzzled

Puzzled

Puzzled

I got this puzzle for my birthday a couple of years ago. I started to make it then but after I matched around a quarter it grown too large for my home desk, so I had to pack it back. In November I took it to S’s place and gave it another try. Unfortunately, she had to pack it for the Christmas general clean up. This Sunday we started to make it for the third time. I strongly hope that was the last time when I started it.

Pancake Day

Pancake Day

Pancake Day

Inspired from serpentineroad I baked some pancakes. The spark was in a thread about Pancake Day, a holiday celebrated on 20th of February in the Anglo-Saxon countries (but not limited to). It is the last day before the Easter Lent when you can eat anything you want. Technicaly speaking, now we should be fasting, but this didn’t stop me to fill them with Nutella.

Things to do in 2007

Things I’d like to do in 2007:

  • Go on holiday with Snej to Prague (most likely)
  • Go to Sziget for a couple of days (pretty doable)
  • Visit London and attend 3 city skates: Wednesday Night Skate, Friday Night Skate and Sunday Stroll (not so likely to happen, because more important things need the money I’d use for London)

These are different then the New Year’s Resolutions, since those are goals, and these are countable items. I hope I can cross them until Autumn 2007. :)

New Year's Resolutions

Following serpentineroad’s (and Bridget Jones’) model here are mine:

  • Get fitter
  • Skate more
  • Use the bicycle more
  • Be more positive (in attitude and behavior)

Two of my friends (Ciprian and Szonyi) thought to buy me, for my birthday, a miniature railway set. Unfortunately, I don’t have the necessary time to set it up now, neither until 22nd of December. I’ll start counting the days until I’ll be back from the Christmas Holiday. A very big thank you from me.

BTW. Did you know that I’ve graduated the Railway Highschool from Timisoara? :)

Thank you again.

PS. AMR until Chrismas two weeks holiday: 3 days.

IELTS results

Yesterday went to British Library to pick up my results (and diploma) for the IELTS General Training Exam I took on 30th of November.

I needed an overall 6, I was hoping for an 7, but when I saw the diploma I couldn’t belive my eyes :D.

On the tests I took at Babel Center, I never had a perfect Reading test (on the IELTS band scale, 9 is maximum). I was expecting to have the smallest grade on Writing, although I didn’t expect to have it so small on Speaking too.

Having these said, here are the results:

  • Listening 8.5
  • Reading 9
  • Writing 7
  • Speaking 7

Christmas is near

I’ve made a round through Bega and bought presents for mine and Snej’s parents. It goes much faster when you know what to buy apriori. Three more presents to buy :).

Also, many many thanks to Snej for her nice surprise.

I found pictures of this bicycle I like on flickr. I’d love to have one of these, to make long rides, on sunny Sundays. I don’t do any rides (exept dayly commuting) these days, so I’ll wait a bit.

reactions to my industrial

Since I’ve got the industrial piercing in my left year, my friends, colleagues and other people who new me had different reactions to it, on the whole range, from positive to negative.

Today, I’ve seen the ‘negativest’ one, from Bogdan. His first instinct almost was: ‘you are fired’, except that he is not my superior, nor he is affiliated with my employer. I was amazed how against piercings and tattoos he was. I was expecting such a reaction from his father, not from him, Although, his father didn’t say a thing. Maybe he was polite, or more open, or didn’t care.

Anyway, I don’t care much what he says. Just that I didn’t know he is not very open minded.

1st day at IELTS preparation course held by Moni went pretty smooth. I made too many mistakes at the test we had in the class, to be satisfied of my level. Unfortunately my current colegues don’t have an advance level, so my language progress will be pretty slow :(. I hope that those I’ll meet Tuesday at the speaking/listening course will have a higher level of English.

Budapest minitour by bike We ...

Budapest minitour by bike. We had time to see:

- Margit Island. It’s a park that looks like Hyde Park/London – Central Park/New York. Big, with smooth pavements and lots of green spaces, with jogging tracks and spa/swimming pools. If I had something like this in Timisoara, that is the place where the skaters would gather.

- The Buda Castle (again) – with the fort and the churches.

- The Vaci Utca – aka the main street from Budapest (only one end, because you have to walk it by foot).

We met 4 Polish guys from Cracow. The were going by bike, from Cracow to Transylvania (Brasov/ Sibiu/ Sighisoara/ Cluj). That’s about 750 km. They were planning to go around 100km/day.

I took the wrong way 2 times. The first time, instead of going to the Nyugatyi Railway Station, I got to the Kelety one. (Pretty big difference). Second time, instead of going left on the Arpad Bridge, I went strait ahead. This time was simpler to follow the correct route.

Since the Budapest by bike ...

Since the Budapest by bike trip got postponed, we have had time to see several bands that wasn’t in the initial schedule:

- Gentleman – very nice show, the attendies got very involved. (though not so many people attended at).
– 17 Hippies – pretty nice, like everything at the the world pannon stage.

Just have seen The Rasmus. :D Pitty that Shalala didn’t want to come to Sziget. She would have enjoyed it. Don’t know about Snej, though.

That’s all for now.

PS: my health is improving.

Ive seendone half of the ...

I’ve seen/done half of the stuff I planned. I missed most of the tai chi stuff, and some concerts from the first day.

I have bought a new pair of rollerblades (yay!!)

For now, weather sucks. Let’s hope that it will improve in the next days…

That’s all.

I arrived at Sziget ...

We set up our tent near Pannon World Stage, where Dan and Emilia first set up their tent.

Difference since the last year: more toilets, more food stands. There are some special places to set up you tent (guarded, and have access only if you have the right bracelet).

Last night we found 4 french people that studied a few months in Cluj. We were amazed that there are French people who speak Romanian.

Sometimes we rely on technology ...

Sometimes we rely on technology too much. For example, let’s take the ‘credit/debit card’ fever.

Now, almost all Romanian companies pay their employees using this system. They say it’s good because they don’t have to carry a large amount of money once a month to the company’s address (and that amount it’s quite big for the large companies, with 1000–2000 people). It’s much cleaner using ‘electronic’ methods. Also, the employee doesn’t have to be extra careful because of the ‘large’ sum of money he has to carry it home.

Now what are the disadvantages? For each time you interrogate your card, you pay a small amount of money. (You don’t pay this amount when you ‘interrogate’ your wallet). Although a lot of people have credit/debit cards, you can’t use them in all the shops (though, the situation has improved in the past years). Also, you are too tight to the ‘electronics’.

Today, for example, I wanted to buy a train ticket to Budapest. It didn’t cost too much, but I had only half of the money. I said, don’t worry, you have your debit card. You can get the rest from the ATM, or in the worst case, you can used it to make the payment. Well… I was wrong. The first ATM I tried, rejected my card. Don’t know why. Second ATM I tried was out of order. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to check the next ATM, and didn’t remember a closer one, so I said, I’ll pay with the card. Well… tough luck, their POS was out of service also.

Luckily, I could borrow some money from a friend.

– in Budapesta luam metroul/autobuzul + hev-ul pana la insula

Si apoi?
– (ne cumparam bilete,) schimbam biletul pe bratara
– instalam cortul si incepem sa ‘socializam’

De ce trebuie sa platim bilet separat pentru ziua de 8?
– oficial, festivalul incepe in data de 9. Ziua de 8 nu (cred ca)
este considerata zi a festivalului.

Cat costa biletele?
– festival – toata perioada (7 zile) – 120EUR
– festival – o zi – 24EUR
– tren Timisoara-Budapesta-Timisoara – ~130RON
– tren – loc Budapesta-Timisoara ~15RON

Nu vreau sa vin toata saptamana. Eu sunt interesat doar de
Rasmus/Radiohead/Prodigy/...
– poti veni cate zile vrei. Biletul pe zi e 24EUR.

Ce hartoage trebuie sa avem la noi?
– pasaport
– bilet Sziget 2006 (sau cumparam pe loc)
– bani de cheltuiala acolo

Forinti sau euro?
– eu as opta direct pentru forinti (evit schimbul lei-eur-forint).
Din cate stiu eu, legea spune ca trebuie sa ai bani sa te
intretii pentru cate zile stai. Nu stiu sa fie specificat sa fie
obligatoriu EUR.

Bine, dar daca vreau sa merg cu EUR?
– e OK. Poti schimba in Budapesta.

gasesti acolo.

Ce preturi sunt acolo?
– 0.5l cola/fanta/... ~ 250HUF
– 0.5 bere ~ 300–350HUF
– un burger ~ 800–1300HUF
– portie mancare chinezeasca/indiana – 1100–1500HUF

Mult success. :)

Cine vine?
– eu (Marius), Dan, Emilia, Zsuzsi, Gabriela, Dan-Radu…

Pot veni si eu?
– sigur, hai in 8 august in gara. Sa ai pregatiti banii si
rucsacul.

Ce sa-mi pun in rucsac?
– pasaport
– bani
– bilet Sziget (optional)
– bilet tren dus-intors
– cort
– sac de dormit
– izolir (neopren)
– prosop
– slip
– crema de plaja
– ochelari de soare
– sapun
– spuma + aparat de ras
– sosete
– lenjerie intima
– tricouri
– pantaloni
– bluze
– geaca de ploaie (sa speram ca nu o vom folosi)
– incaltaminte de schimb (daca nu vrei sa porti o singura
pereche toata saptamana)
– tacamuri (cutit/lingura/farfurie)
– cana
– sfoara
– tigari
– lanterna
– aparat foto

Daca uit ceva din lista de mai sus?
– nu-i bai.

– nu.

My books from Amazon arrived ...

My books from Amazon arrived today. I’ll pick them up after my English class. Yay!!! :D

From the Its a small ...

From the “It’s a small world” series.

Today I’ll write about two colleagues (girls) from work with whom I have 3 different acquaintances, a girl I fancied some time ago and one of my best friends and a guy I sort of know because we have mutual friends.

Adela’s best friend is Ruxi, a girl I met when I was in the second year of University. We actually haven’t gone out together then. It was more a cat (me) and mouse (she) game :).

One of Claudia’s friends is Lacramioara. She went to a New Years Eve several years ago with Daniel. Claudia knows Daniel also.

Claudia also knows Edi (he is Dan’s and Alin’s friend). Claudia and Adela are friends :).

Also, I have to mention Sergiu’s friend (Silviu) who is dating Simona Ungur’s roommate. :)

So, it’s a small small world, after all…

Yesterday I had a spectacular ...

Yesterday I had a spectacular evening with Snej and Cipi. He wanted to scout the salsa school he found out about on Thursday, so I and Snej were companions. I wasn’t impressed by their dancing skills, but he will give them a chance and will attend their classes at Gen. 22. Around 1 o’clock we headed home via Unirii. Neither of us didn’t remember that at that hour we won’t found any terrace open there. If we had thought a bit about this before leaving Yacht Club, the Campus would have became our destination. So after wondering through Unirii Square from terrace to terrace, we had to give up and take a sit on the stone bench. After a few minutes me and Snej went home. Bought a 1l vanilla-caramel ice cream and had a little snack before going to sleep.

Other matter I would like to mention is that Snej cooked an excellent lunch. She made turkey soup for the first dish, turkey roast with potatoes for the second and strawberries as a desert. It was delicious, I tell you.

In the evening, Snej stayed home to learn for her exam and I went to skate. I started around half past twenty and returned home around half past one. A notable thing is that I had lots of energy despise the hot evening it was here. Probably because of the tasty lunch. I made around ten-twenty km at the stadium and ten or twenty in the city. This time, we were seven that started the tour and finished only five. Dana left after we had hit the Campus and Pavel before midnight. Pity that some of us didn’t have very good skates and we were a bit slow. I would like to note that my ex girlfriend, Carmen goes out with Seba. I’m not affected or anything, just to wish them a happy friendship. Another notable thing is that I felt and teared my trousers. If I hadn’t had the earphones in the right pocket, that part wouldn’t be broken now. Though, my earphones are OK, just a little scratch. Except that, I sweated a lot, like at a good sauna, it wasn’t concentrated in fifteen-twenty minutes thought, but over 5 hours…

Today I spent my evening ...

Today, I spent my evening on skates, like yesterday. We were a few at Dan Paltinisan Stadium, but only two went to do a Saturday Night Skate. Me and Rudi did an ‘old time’ route: Stadion – Complex Studentesc (Campus) – Piata Victoriei – Piata Maria – Piata Sinaia – Gara de Nord – Bv Republicii – Skate Park – Piata Victoriei – Complex – Stadion.

We remembered the last years, when the new skaters came with us on this route, no matter how good they were. Usualy, we stayed at the Stadium one or two hours and then went to that route in 2 or 3 hours (with more then one hour pause at skating park). Nowadays, we only stay at the Stadium and don’t do any routes. Even the shortest one, Stadion – Complex, it’s less and less practiced. We should start convincing the new guys and girls to come with us on this routes. It’s fun!

Today its the 3rd day ...

Today it’s the 3rd day I commuted to work by bike. This time not from my apartment (15 minutes to walk, 7 minutes by bike at a slow pace), but from Snej’s. That’s 15 minutes by bike, riding faster.

Still have to go to the English course (~10 minutes) and to Real/Selgros/Metro.

I’m thinking to ride to work everyday, even it takes only a few minutes. Though, I have to find a more appropriate way to carry different stuff (notebooks for English class) instead of the actual backpack. I could buy a basket and mount it in the front of the bike or use a smallish messenger bag.

I just have been to ...

I just have been to Art Cafe for a Saturday night party. It is sort of Hush 2. The DJs are present (Horatiu and Craciun), part of the people are present (Andreea and Teodora, Punk Alina). Even the entrance fee had been the same as it was in Hush (30.000 now).

It was nice to see some familiar faces again, listen to some brit pop music and dance a bit. Had a great time with Przemek and Zsuzsi.

When I came home (around 5 in the morning) the sky have been starting to turn blue.

Also, as a small, note, beside the London like weather (with lots of rains and 15 Celsius degrees), I took a small ride with my bike. Damn it feels good.

My skates broke : Actually ...

My skates broke :(. Actually, they had broken friday, when I was skating to “Universitatea de Vest”. The ‘smart’, Total Fit System (TFS) closure system, from my Rollerblade’s Aero yielded. The kevlar thread gave up after 2 years of medium-intensive usage.

I could try to replace it with some cotton/silk thread, but I couldn’t be bothered to do it. Instead I’ll buy a new pair of skates.

I have seen a pair of Fila, a few weeks ago at a sport shop near the Botanic Park. I’ll check them this weekend.

Last week I sent a ...

Last week I sent a mail to The Shebang’s team from TripleM Brisbane and told them that I’m from Romania, listen to their show and a few more things. Today I got a reply from they telling that my email was mentioned on their show,last Friday. In that mail there was a mp3 with the part of the show when they have read my email.

OK, if you listen to it, you’ll laugh a bit, because just as this blog, is full of grammar mistakes. But let’s forget about this thing and think of the following fact: they actually sent me a record of the part of their show, when I was expecting an generated email saying: Thank you for your feedback, we read them all, bla bla…

It looks like I picked the right country where I want to leave in.

i had software issue with my ipod nano. after i played with speed normal/fast when an audiobook was playing (press middle button several times to get there), i got stuck with “speed normal” on menu all the times. when i pressed the middle button, it switched between “speed normal” (a few times per cycle) and audiobook/song picture. i tried a menu reset,connected it to itunes, but it did’t worked. doing a hard reset solved this problem.

to do a hard reset on ipod nano:
1. Toggle hold on.
2. Toggle hold off.
3. Hold down the menu and middle button for a few seconds.
4. The iPod nano should then “reboot” and voila!

Allright Im pissed off Why ...

Allright. I’m pissed off. Why? Because there are countless webdesigners that makes webpages without any ideea of “human interface guidelines”. This are some simple rules to follow when you are doing something that you want to be used by people. If you don’t know where to find them try a search on google.com. Try to read one (you might be surprised). I’m not pissed off about the home user’s pages that are made to say “hello” and show his dog pictures, I’m pissed off on connex.ro or other “great” companies that should have better sites. That’s it. connex SUX.
